In the late 1970’s to the early 1990’s, with coordination with KGS staff, the District initiated a study of the water quality in the eastern half of the District. Specifically, this study identified the intrusion of saltwater (from the dissolution of salt) in the Permian bedrock into the overlying Great Bend Prairie aquifer. This area became known as the mineral intrusion area and in 2003, the District established rules to regulate water quality sampling within this region.
Public input is critical for this to be effective. Use the button below to submit your comments and concerns to the District so your voice is heard!
Reestablish the water quality monitoring within the area and specifically focus on chloride concentrations throughout the upper, middle, and lower portions of the aquifer.
Coordinate and review the water quality data results with KDHE and KGS to maintain collaborative approach to monitoring and regulating the water quality of the region.
